What kind of gauge do you get with size 9? Are the stitches too large? You can also try knitting with one size 8 and one size 9 needle and see if that gives you the 8.5 size gauge you want :)

That's great! Just remember that the recommended needle size is only a suggested starting point, letting you know what size the pattern writer used. Your tension is likely different. It's not important what size needles you use. The important thing is to get gauge ;)
